Quicksilver mines
The mines of Levigliani represent the oldest mining site in the entire Upper Tuscany region, first documented in a municipal document from the city of Pisa in 1153.
HYSTORY
For centuries, the mines were an extraction site for cinnabar, a reddish-colored mineral used to produce red dye for Florentine workshops since the Middle Ages. In more recent times, cinnabar gained economic significance for its mercury content, which was primarily used in the extraction processes of precious metals such as gold and silver, as well as in leather tanning for the production of felt hats.
Abandoned in the 1970s, the mines underwent significant restoration in the 2000s for tourist, scientific, and educational purposes.
VISIT ROUTE
The accessible part of the mines is divided into two sites: the first one, very ancient, provides a rare glimpse into primitive mining techniques. It is one of the few sites in the world where native droplets of mercury can be observed oozing from the rock walls. The second site, excavated with early rudimentary pneumatic hammers in the early 1900s and equipped with a rail system for cart transportation, represents a true testimony to the industrial archaeology of the area. Inside, various mineralogical rarities have also been discovered. The process of distilling cinnabar to obtain mercury was carried out on-site, using machinery and equipment that still exist and can be visited today.

The mines of Levigliani are a unique environment of rare mineral wealth. Within them, a new mineral was discovered for the first time, and in honor of the territory, it was named “Leviglianite.”
