The Quicksilver mines represent a truly unique historic and naturalistic attraction.
They are actually ancient quicksilver, or mercury, mines and have been functional until the first half of the 20th century. The most ancient part, which is now accessible, was dug by the Romans, probably more than 2.000 years ago.
The structure of the different galleries shows the millenary evolutions of the excavation techniques: from the hand-chiseled wells of 2 millennia ago until the modern galleries equipped with railroad carts.
Mercury is normally coupled with brimstone within a reddish mineral called cinnabar, which must be boiled in order to extract the precious metal.
A unique characteristic of the Levigliani mine is the presence, even if in small quantities, of mercury in its pure state within the structure of the rocks. This phenomenon is present in only two places in the whole world.
