CORCHIA PARK

Antro del Corchia
Tourist Cave

The karst system of Antro del Corchia represents one of the largest underground environments in Europe and one of the most extensive in the world. It consists of a complex network of tunnels, shafts, and chambers that have been carved by water over millions of years within the marble core of Monte Corchia. So far, approximately 70 km of caves and 20 different entrances have been explored and mapped, spanning across the mountain from various directions. Ongoing explorations by spelunkers continue to unveil new chambers and hidden marvels within the marble.

VISIT ROUTE

The tourist visit of Antro del Corchia spans approximately 2,000 meters of pathways, taking visitors through a wide steel walkway that ensures maximum safety. The visit is guided, conducted in groups, and lasts about two hours. The level of difficulty of the route is equivalent to a very easy and short trekking experience. The visit is recommended for children above the age of three and for individuals without mobility issues or acute heart conditions.

Access to the Antro del Corchia is granted through a purposefully excavated, 170-meter-long artificial tunnel, designed to provide a pathway into the cave without disturbing the natural entrances. Upon traversing the tunnel, visitors arrive at the Galleria Franosa, a breathtaking canyon that towers several meters high, with a walkway positioned at its base. The Franosa gives way to the Galleria degli inglesi, named as a tribute to the British explorers who discovered it in the 1960s. Within this section, visitors can marvel at the first colossal formations and encounter a fossilized underground lake. The visit concludes with “the loop,” a circular path that unveils the most spectacular subterranean environment one could ever witness. It features immense chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, captivating formations, and a collection of artwork meticulously shaped by the forces of water and rock over millions of years.

HISTORY

The Antro del Corchia represents an incredibly vast underground environment that, even centuries after its discovery, continues to be a thrilling frontier for spelunkers and deep-sea explorers. The first entrance was discovered in 1840 by the naturalist Emilio Simi, and today there are twenty known entrances to the cave system. Since the early 20th century, speleological groups from across Europe have ventured into the Antro. The British explorers hold a legendary status as they were the pioneers in exploring a section that now houses the tourist gallery. In the 1980s, multiple exploration teams, entering from different points, converged within the mountain and realized they were exploring a single colossal karst complex. The tourist route was established in 2001 after a two-year effort that involved the installation of a 52-ton steel walkway. This walkway was intelligently designed to be completely removable in the future, allowing for the restoration of the original underground environment.
