Marble Quarries
The marble quarries have been the economic and social focal point of the Apuan region for at least two millennia. Corchia Park provides the opportunity to visit some of these magnificent stone cathedrals, carved into the white marble heart of the mountain.
VISIT ROUTE
Once you arrive at the quarry, you put on protective helmets and venture into the immense marble chambers. Visiting a quarry means entering a spectacular environment that is completely different from anything you may have seen before.
The quarry does not adhere to human scale; it has the dimensions of giants. Its ceilings reach dozens of meters in height, with enormous chambers, colossal blocks, and heavy excavation machinery weighing up to 80 tons.
VISIT TO THE WORKING QUARRY
This is a fascinating visit to the quarry while it is in operation. The experience, conducted with utmost safety measures, allows you to witness up close the various stages of extraction and observe the movement of the massive cutting and transportation machinery.
The visit lasts approximately 2.5 hours in total, starting from the CorchiaPark ticket office in the village of Levigliani and concluding with a return to the same location.
VISIT WITH BREAKFAST OR SNACK OF THE QUARRYMAN
The profession of the quarryman requires a significant calorie intake, and over time, the tradition of breakfast and snacks based on lard and bread has been established. Quarry workers consume these meals between regular meals.
The visit takes place during days when quarry activities are not in operation and offers not only incredible scenery and breathtaking views but also a quarryman’s breakfast/snack.
The breakfast or snack, depending on whether the visit takes place in the morning or afternoon, is set up on the panoramic terrace overlooking the valley. From there, you can enjoy a view of Forte dei Marmi, with a clear sightline extending to Corsica and the entire Ligurian coast all the way to France. These meals are authentic tastings of typical Versilia products from local small-scale producers, accompanied by wine aged within the Antro del Corchia cave.
